Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is an effective, safe and fun way to get some regular exercise in. Generally, it is indicated for participants who have difficulty with weight-bearing, balance, or just prefer exercising more in the water than on land. Due to the buoyancy of the water, participants who have difficulty bearing weight on their knees, hips or ankles, or those who have low back pain, are able to perform exercises targeted at strengthening and improving the stability and flexibility in their legs. The joints are offloaded, allowing you to exercise more easily. If you experience joint stiffness, the warm water also helps with allowing you to move better, and with less pain.

Improving balance is also a good reason to try hydrotherapy. Walking in the water is much different to being on land so your balance will be challenged in a different way as well. The safer upside however is that you can practice your balance without risking a fall when you do it in the water.  If you find yourself needing to walk with a stick or a 4 wheel walker on land, you might find that you can walk without any help in the pool! Getting good at this eventually leads to improvements on land as well.

Lastly, hydrotherapy class is a good way to socialise and meet people who might be experiencing the same thing as you. It allows you to join a community of people who share the same goals as you, and look out and motivate each other to keep getting stronger. We’ve seen many clients benefit greatly from hydrotherapy over the years, and we are very excited to welcome you to our class in the future!

Exercises are performed in a pool heated between 32 – 34 degrees under the guidance of a trained physiotherapist.
