We’re all familiar with New Year’s resolutions — you know, the goals we set to live a healthier lifestyle and finally get into our favourite fitness routine. Well, 2021 has been an exciting year — we’ve taken giant steps backwards regarding our health and fitness due to lockdowns and other restrictions. But that doesn’t mean we should forget those well-intended selfies or exercise commitments in 2020! It just means that instead of resolving to stay fit each year, let’s look beyond the immediate future for some real inspiration: let’s commit this new year’s resolution to get back on track in 2023! Let me share some tips and tricks with you information I have learned over my many years as a runner, gym member, swimmer and (limited) athlete so you can make sure your plan pays off sooner than expected.
Find an Activity You Enjoy
If you hate running, don’t force yourself to do it just because you think it’s the “best” form of exercise. Find an activity that you enjoy and that you can stick with long-term. Some people prefer group fitness classes, while others prefer solo activities like hiking or biking.
Set a Realistic Goal
The first step to getting back into shape is to set a realistic goal. If you haven’t worked out in months (or years), don’t expect to be able to run a marathon tomorrow. Start small and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts.
Make Time for Exercise
Exercise should be a priority in your life, not an afterthought. Schedule time for your workouts just as you would any other necessary appointment. Put it in your calendar, and make sure you stick to it!
Set Yourself Up for Success
Set yourself up for success by planning and having everything you need for your workout before you start. This means laying out your clothes, packing your gym bag, and ensuring you have enough time to complete your workout without feeling rushed.
Be Patient
Remember that getting back into shape takes time and patience. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results immediately; stay motivated and keep at it!
